Their Story

Get to know the artisan whose dedication keeps Paete’s woodcarving tradition alive

HOW DID THEY START?

Kuya Franco grew up in a family known for its woodcarving tradition, which inspired him to continue the craft. As a child, he wanted toy cars but could not afford them, so he began carving his own wooden toy cars. This early experience motivated him to practice regularly and helped his skills develop over time.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

For Kuya Franco, the main challenge today is the declining interest in woodcarving among younger generations. The craft requires patience, precision, and careful technique, which can be difficult to sustain. Despite this, he finds the work rewarding as each step reveals more of the final form.

TO GENERATION Z?

He believes woodcarving remains meaningful because it allows individuals to create unique and personal pieces. He encourages Gen Z to try the craft by starting with simple shapes and gradually learning finer details. He adds that dedication is essential and that the finished work provides a strong sense of accomplishment.
