Preserving Paete’s Carving Heritage for the Next Generation

Welcome to Ukit Tayo!, a digital home for Pag-uukit, the traditional woodcarving art from Paete, Laguna. Through this educational platform featuring stories and videos, we aim to preserve its legacy while inspiring Filipino Gen Z to create, learn, and connect with our roots.

Why the legacy of Pag-uukit needs our help now more than ever

The intangible cultural heritage of traditional wood carving in Paete, Laguna is in danger. A 2019 report by Antonio dela Rosa, the municipal agriculture officer, showed the number of active carvers dropped from an estimated 5,000 during its peak to only 900.

Based on 2019 reports by Kimmy Baraoidan, the majority of Paete’s wood carving community belongs to an older demographic, with renowned artisans like Justino Cagayat at age 65, and Luisito Ac-ac at age 73.

According to Bayocot’s findings regarding the challenges affecting Paete’s woodcarving industry, it was revealed that people lack public awareness towards the craft.
